Looking Inward for Transformation
The renowned French novelist Anais Nin once remarked, “You do not perceive the world as it is, but as you are.”
Throughout numerous days, weeks, months, and even years, we often expend considerable effort trying to reshape the world around us, primarily under the assumption that external circumstances give rise to challenges. However, the fundamental truth remains that the thoughts residing within your mind materialise, irrespective of your intentions. In essence, life serves as a reflection of your thoughts.
Thus, effecting change in your external surroundings necessitates a prior transformation of your internal landscape. It entails working from the inside out.
As the calendar flipped to 2022, my life was diverging from its intended course despite my earnest endeavours. The outcomes I sought to achieve remained elusive. It was then that I recognised the need to pause and listen, delving into the occurrences around me and the unplanned events in my life. This contemplation demanded a journey inward, where I acknowledged that I had sculpted my reality.
Confronting your inner self with candour can prove to be an uncomfortable expedition. Rarely does one readily admit to orchestrating the chaos surrounding them, to being accountable for strained relationships or unrealised promotions.
Albert Einstein astutely remarked, “We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them.”
Hence, if transformation is your aspiration, your cognitive framework must undergo a metamorphosis. This was my imperative. I meticulously examined the thoughts that governed my reality, capturing them daily and even meditating upon them. I conscientiously focused on my aspirations, internalising their validity, and undertook tangible actions in alignment with these goals. Within a few short weeks, my focused thoughts began to shape the changes I ardently desired.
It is a universal verity that the busyness of our lives often obscures our awareness of the thoughts we harbour—until these thoughts actualise into reality. Whether one believes in failure or success, that belief invariably manifests.
Recently, a client of mine approached me after experiencing job loss. He was adrift in confusion, grappling with a subdued mood, and mystified by the situation. He believed he was performing well and enjoyed collaborating with colleagues. Our exploration unearthed his perceptions of his role, his attitudes toward the company, and his feelings about daily work.
He conveyed sentiments like “I didn’t particularly admire my supervisor; I had been contemplating leaving for some time” and “The constant changes were quite exasperating.” As evident, his thoughts became the canvas upon which his reality was painted. Unwittingly, his perspective had soured his engagement, resulting in thoughts about moving on. These mental dispositions would naturally cascade into emotions and ultimately, actions that projected incongruent signals.
Frequently, our actions unfold subconsciously. Thus, if the tapestry of your reality doesn’t align with your intentions, take a moment to journey inward and inspect your thoughts.
- Cultivate thoughts aligned with your desires
- Visualise the attainment of your aspirations
- Nurture these thoughts daily
- Embrace the conviction that your desires are within reach
- Immerse yourself in the emotions associated with fulfilment
- Ensure your actions are harmonious with your intentions.
